Landon Gilmore is the Director of Choral Activities at San Angelo Central High School, where he directs the Bobcat Chorale, Men’s Choir, and The HarmoniCats - the school’s show choir, which he created in 2012. Mr. Gilmore is currently in his 14th year of teaching high school choral music in Texas, the past 12 years of which have been in San Angelo. As a leader for the music programs within the San Angelo Independent School District, Mr. Gilmore provides leadership to over 700 students and 6 full-time choral music educators within the secondary schools of the Central High School cluster. Choirs under Mr. Gilmore’s direction have consistently received sweepstakes awards and superior ratings in choral festivals and University Interscholastic League events. Mr. Gilmore also provides support to choral music programs across the state by serving as a frequent clinician and adjudicator. Prior to moving to San Angelo in 2011, Mr. Gilmore taught in Conroe ISD as the Associate Choir Director at College Park High School in The Woodlands.
As a pastoral musician, Mr. Gilmore is committed to serving churches of various denominations as a worship leader, music director, and music minister. Since 2014, Mr. Gilmore has served as the Choirmaster and Director of Music at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in San Angelo. Prior to that, he served in musical leadership at several prominent churches across the state: Sacred Heart Cathedral, Immanuel Baptist Church, and First Christian Church in San Angelo; Tallowood Baptist Church, Houston’s First Baptist Church (Main/Loop Campus), and Baptist Temple in Houston; Chalk Bluff Baptist Church, Central Christian Church, and First Baptist Church in Waco; and First Baptist Church in Madisonville. In 2018, Mr. Gilmore formed a choir of musicians from churches across San Angelo and led them in performance with Christian worship music artists and hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty as part of their Sing! An Irish Christmas National Tour.
Mr. Gilmore holds a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Sam Houston State University, where he studied with Allen Hightower, Carol Smith, and James Franklin. While at SHSU, he served as Teaching Assistant for the Director of Choral Activities, Conductor of the SHSU Opera, and taught undergraduate courses in conducting. Mr. Gilmore is also a proud graduate of Baylor University, completing a Bachelor of Music Education degree in Instrumental Music in 2007. At Baylor, he studied saxophone and music technology with Michael Jacobson; conducting with Donald Bailey, Barry Kraus, and Christopher Bianco; and choral music with Jeffery Ames, Randall Bradley, and John W. McLean. As an undergraduate at Baylor, Mr. Gilmore had the rare distinction of serving as Section Leader in the Baylor University A Cappella Choir; Section Leader and Assistant Conductor of the Baylor University Concert Choir; and Section Leader, Student Conductor, and President of the Baylor University Men’s Choir. In 2008, he was honored to receive an invitation to return and perform on a concert with the Baylor University Chamber Singers, where Dr. Bailey awarded him with honorary alumni status within the group.
Mr. Gilmore has had the privilege to continue his development as a choral musician and conductor through numerous workshops and masterclasses with such notable choral conductors as Anton Armstrong, John Dickson, Frank Eychaner, Joseph Flummerfelt, Jerry McCoy, Eric Nelson, Don Neuen, Paul Salamunovich, and André Thomas. As a performer, Mr. Gilmore is a member of the San Angelo Symphony Chorus, The Gents of West Texas, and Voci d’Amici (Dr. Loyd Hawthorne, conductor).
Mr. Gilmore currently serves the Texas Music Educators Association as Vocal Division Chair for Region 6, and Large School Choir Contest Coordinator for Regions 6 and 7. In addition, he has served on state committees of the Texas Choral Directors Association and the University Interscholastic League, and, in 2018, served as a Section Leader for the TMEA All-State Tenor-Bass Choir. Mr. Gilmore’s professional affiliations include the American Choral Directors Association [ACDA], Texas Choral Directors Association [TCDA], Texas Music Educators Association [TMEA], Texas Music Adjudicators Association [TMAA], Society of Pi Kappa Lambda (National Music Honor Society) [ΠΚΛ], and the Royal School of Church Music in America [RSCM America].
Mr. Gilmore is excited to be working with Dr. Posada and the board to establish the San Angelo Chorus and present its inaugural concert season.
